Lot 372:
Description
A trio of earthenware seated spaniel chimney ornaments, comprising a matched pair and a single figure, in the style of 19th-century Staffordshire potteries. Each figure is modelled in a seated position with textured fur, floppy ears, and a collar with an attached lead chain. The decoration consists of hand-applied copper lustre patches to the ears, body, and tail, with facial features including eyes and muzzles picked out in black pigment. The moulded collars and chains are also highlighted in copper lustre. The glaze on the central figure exhibits a more pronounced bluish-white tint compared to the outer pair. No factory marks or signatures are visible.
Condition report:
The left-hand figure of the pair sustained significant damage, featuring a large irregular hole with ceramic loss to the reverse of the head. All three figures show overall surface crazing to the glaze and rubbing to the copper lustre decoration consistent with age. Small firing vent holes are present on the reverse of the figures, and minor pitting is visible in the glaze, both occurring during the manufacturing process.
