Description
A Capodimonte hand-painted ceramic figurine by the sculptor Giuseppe Cappe, depicting a dishevelled traveller or vagabond. The character is portrayed in a seated pose atop a wooden trunk, set upon a base textured to resemble cobblestones. To his right sits a green suitcase with a hanging tag, and to his left is a milestone inscribed Km 20 ROMA. The figure is dressed in a floppy, tattered hat, a white open-collared shirt, a brown waistcoat, and patched trousers, and is shown holding a rolled scroll or map. The piece features expressive detailing and a scroll-moulded base with gilded highlights. The front of the base bears a blue underglaze mark consisting of a capital letter N surmounted by a five-pointed crown within a circular frame. An incised signature for G. Cappe is located on the top of the base beside the milestone.
Height: 29cm
Width: 22cm.
Condition report:
The figurine is in generally good condition with no visible chips, cracks, or repairs to the delicate extremities, including the fingers, hat brim, and suitcase handle. There is minor, expected wear to the gilded accents on the base consistent with age.
