Lot 155:
Description
A French Model 1886/15 Lebel infantry bayonet, often referred to by the colloquialism Rosalie. This example features a steel cruciform blade designed for thrusting, paired with a cast brass hilt and a steel crossguard. The crossguard is fitted with a muzzle ring and notably lacks the hooked quillon, a design simplification introduced in 1916 during the First World War. The bayonet is accompanied by its original cylindrical steel scabbard, which terminates in a small ball-shaped tip. A circular French military inspection stamp, known as a poincon, is visible on the ricasso of the blade.
Blade Length: 52 cm
Overall Length: 64 cm.
Condition report:
The item is in fair condition. The steel crossguard and the entire exterior surface of the scabbard show significant oxidation and heavy pitting. The brass hilt has a dark age-related patina with some minor surface scuffs. The blade remains relatively bright with some surface wear and minor spotting. The locking button on the hilt is present and functional.
