Description

A large carved stone figure of Budai, also known as the Laughing Buddha, depicted in a reclining pose. The figure is carved from a pale, mottled greyish-white stone with a visible crystalline structure and translucent areas, consistent with white marble. Budai is shown leaning against a large sack, with a wide laughing expression, elongated earlobes, and a prominent exposed belly. He wears loose robes and holds a string of prayer beads in his left hand. The composition includes carved stacks of coins or ingots and a base with brickwork detailing. The style is characteristic of 20th-century Chinese stone carving. No reign marks or inscriptions are visible on the item.

Condition report:

The figure is in overall good condition with natural inclusions and surface variations inherent to the stone. There is light surface dust and minor accumulated dirt within the recessed areas of the carving. No significant chips, cracks, or repairs are visible.
