Description

This lot comprises two silver provincial trade tokens dated 1811. The first is a Gloucester County and City shilling token. The obverse features a Gloucester Cathedral type with the legend GLOUCESTER COUNTY AND CITY TOKEN and the Roman numeral date MDCCCXI in the exergue. The reverse features a city coat of arms type within a wreath with the legend FOR XII PENCE. The second is a sixpence silver token issued by H. Morgan of London for use in Derby, Leicester, and Northampton. The obverse features an inscriptional type detailing the locations and the date 1811 within a circular border reading H. MORGAN LICENSED MAKER 12 RATHBONE PLACE LONDON. The reverse features a shield bearing a rose type with the legends SIX PENNY and SILVER TOKEN. Both pieces are of silver composition with reeded edges. These tokens were issued by provincial merchants and municipalities to alleviate the shortage of official Royal Mint silver coinage during the Napoleonic Wars.
