Lot 368:
Description
A hand-carved hexagonal lidded box, crafted from mottled pale green and tan soapstone. The lid is decorated with a central floral motif featuring a cross-hatched centre, surrounded by concentric hexagonal borders of openwork lattice, known as jali work, and incised foliate patterns. The sides of the box continue the decorative theme with relief carving and pierced sections. The interior is unlined, displaying the natural texture of the stone and visible tool marks from the carving process. No maker’s marks, signatures, or hallmarks are present on the interior or exterior surfaces. This item is consistent with handcrafted soapstone decorative wares produced in India.
Condition report:
The item is in good overall condition. There are some surface scratches to the interior floor and a minor accumulation of dust within the recessed carved details. No chips, cracks, or repairs are visible.
