Description

This lot consists of two metal items dating from the 20th century. The first is a rectangular case of English manufacture, constructed from electroplated nickel silver (EPNS). The exterior is decorated with an engine-turned barleycorn pattern and features a small rectangular cartouche in the upper left corner engraved with a cursive monogram M. The case is fitted with a push-button release and a hinged opening. The interior has a gilt-wash finish and is stamped with the maker mark F & F and EPNS, while the inner rim is stamped Made in England. The second item is a sterling silver bookmark with a flat, curved blade. The handle is ornamented with embossed rococo-style scrolling foliate and floral motifs. The handle bears four Birmingham hallmarks including a lion passant, an anchor symbol, a lowercase date letter in a shaped shield, and the maker mark W . V. A dark green textile tassel is threaded through a circular aperture at the terminal.

Condition report:

The case exterior shows light surface scratches and moderate tarnishing. The interior gilt-wash finish is heavily worn with significant oxidation and spotting. The silver bookmark shows moderate tarnishing and surface wear consistent with age and use. The tassel is intact with minor signs of fraying at the ends.
