Description
A pair of early 20th-century colour prints titled A Quiet Game at Nap, after original illustrations by W. G. Baxter (1856-1888) produced for Pears. The Victorian-style caricatures depict a group of men engaged in a card game within a domestic interior. The first print is subtitled I. – NAP FOR ALL I’M WORTH! and the second is subtitled II. – SPOOFED, BY JOVE!. Both pieces feature the printed signatures of W. G. Baxter to the lower left corner and Pears to the lower right corner. The prints are presented in mounts and housed within glazed, black-painted wooden frames with gilt inner details.
Condition report:
Both prints and mounts exhibit significant foxing and age-related discoloration throughout. The frames show notable paint loss, abrasions, and general wear consistent with age.
