Description

A Victorian earthenware plate of circular form featuring a scalloped and moulded rim. The piece is decorated in the flow blue transfer-printed style. The central composition depicts a romanticised Italianate landscape with classical buildings, domed towers, and a gondola-style boat on a body of water. The wide border is composed of dense floral arrangements, including roses and other blossoms, interspersed with four small vignettes of architectural scenes. The rim is further detailed with moulded scrollwork and blue feathered accents. The reverse bears a blue printed mark featuring a swan on water above a ribbon scroll containing the pattern name JAPAN. Below the scroll are the initials T.R and Co, with a further letter T below and a printed letter F to the left. This mark identifies the manufacturer as Thomas Rathbone and Co, who operated the Portobello Pottery near Edinburgh, Scotland.

Diameter: 25 cm.

Condition report:

The plate exhibits significant signs of age and wear. There is extensive fine crazing across the entire surface, accompanied by noticeable brown staining and discolouration, particularly to the central cream-coloured field. Minor glaze fretting and small chips are present along the outer scalloped edge. No major cracks or professional repairs are visible.
