Lot 184:
Description
A multi-volume set of Purnell’s History of the Second World War, edited by Captain B.H. Liddell Hart in association with the Imperial War Museum. This collection comprises the bound editions of the weekly partwork magazine series originally published in the late 1960s. The volumes are quarto in format and bound in the publisher’s black cloth or paper-covered boards with large, blocky gilt-effect lettering to the front covers and spines. The work is noted for its comprehensive archival documentation, featuring a profusion of black and white photographs, maps, and tactical diagrams. Internal pages include a double-page spread featuring a concrete structure with the painted slogan SEE GERMAN AND DIE. The spines bear the publisher’s name, PURNELL’S, at the head followed by the title.
Condition report:
The set exhibits shelf wear consistent with age and use. There is visible bumping to the corners and spine ends across the volumes, with some rubbing and loss to the gilt-effect lettering on the covers and spines. The internal pages appear generally clean, though they show evidence of light handling and minor edge wear to the leaves. No dust jackets are present, as issued for these bound editions.
