Lot 287: A Mid-19th Century Staffordshire Pottery Highlander Flat-Back Spill Vase
Not sold
A mid-19th Century Staffordshire pottery spill vase, modeled as a standing highlander figure. The figure is depicted in traditional Scottish attire, including a kilt with a red and green tartan pattern, a sporran, a plumed hat, a blue coat, and an ermine-trimmed red cloak. The highlander is holding a rifle and stands upon a mossy, textured base decorated with a spaniel-type hunting dog and a fallen game bird. A hollow tree stump form serves as the spill holder to the side of the figure. The front of the base features the raised block title HIGHLANDER, with the characters painted in black.
Condition report:
The figurine shows extensive crazing throughout the glaze. There is significant flaking and paint loss to the black enamel on the shoes (photo 1), the spaniel\'s facial features (photo 1), and the title lettering on the base (photo 3). A notable material loss or large chip is present to the green foliage section on the lower left side, adjacent to the dog\'s head (photo 1). Typical kiln-related firing imperfections and surface staining are present on the unglazed underside (photo 2).
