Lot 237: A 1919 Birmingham Sterling Silver Teaspoon
Sold for: £25
A 1919 sterling silver teaspoon of standard form. The reverse of the bowl features elaborate bright-cut floral engraving, depicting a central large flower head surrounded by smaller blossoms and foliate sprays. The handle is similarly decorated with scrolling leaf and floral motifs in a naturalistic style. The reverse of the handle bears a clear set of British hallmarks and a maker’s mark. The hallmarks include a capital letter U in a square shield with clipped corners, a walking lion passant, an anchor, and a profile head of King George V. These marks correspond to the Birmingham Assay Office for the year 1919. A maker’s mark is also present, comprising the characters L & CO in a circular punch above J & G in a shield-shaped punch.
Weight: 22g.
Condition report:
The spoon is in good vintage condition with expected signs of light surface wear and fine scratches consistent with age. There is moderate tarnish (patina) present, primarily visible in the recessed areas of the engraving and around the handle. The engraving remains crisp and well-defined. No bends, cracks, or repairs are visible in the provided images.
