An 1840 sterling silver table spoon in the Old English pattern. The spoon features a rounded handle terminal curving downwards with a raised pip to the front. The reverse of the handle is engraved with a crest depicting a demi-griffin rising from a torse. The reverse of the stem bears a full set of London hallmarks: the maker’s mark GA for George Adams of Chawner & Co, the lion passant for sterling silver, the leopard’s head for the London assay office, a lowercase e date letter for the year 1840, and the Queen Victoria duty mark.

Weight: 66g.

Condition report:

The spoon shows signs of use and handling throughout. There are numerous fine surface scratches and swirl marks across the bowl and handle surfaces. Small nicks are visible to the edges of the bowl and handle terminal. The engraved crest shows softening from age and cleaning. Light tarnish is present, particularly in the recesses of the hallmarks and engraving.
