Lot 46: A French Style Walnut Veneer Cupboard, with decorative metal hardware
A cupboard of rectangular form, constructed with highly figured book-matched walnut veneers across the drawer and door fronts. The piece features a molded top above a single full-width frieze drawer, set with two ornate cast metal drop-handle pulls and a central foliate escutcheon. Below, two cabinet doors are decorated with raised, arched panel moldings and vertical metal escutcheons featuring scrollwork motifs. The carcass is flanked by carved, scrolling corbels at the upper corners and is supported by short block feet with carved foliate details. The doors open to reveal an internal storage space. No maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the item.
Condition report:
The cupboard shows signs of significant wear and age-related damage. The top surface exhibits heavy dust, staining, and finish loss. There are visible losses to the veneer on the lower-left edge and along the base molding. Cracks and lifting of the veneer are present on the left door panel and the drawer front. The right-hand foot shows damage and loss to the decorative scrollwork. All metal hardware exhibits oxidation and a dark patina. Scuffs and scratches are present across all wood surfaces.
