Lot 347: A Framed Chinese Style Cross-stitch Needlework Panel Featuring a Dragon
Not sold
A Chinese style needlework panel, executed in cross-stitch on a white even-weave fabric ground. The central subject is a traditional long-bodied dragon in shades of blue-green and grey, depicted with two front legs and a trailing tail. The dragon is surrounded by stylised ruyi-form clouds and flame motifs in brown and gold tones. The panel is enclosed within a rectangular fretwork border featuring a key pattern in teal and grey, accented by four stylised lotus flowers positioned at the centre of each side. The embroidery utilises cotton or silk floss, with metallic yellow metal thread defining the outlines of the figures and the border. The piece is presented in a double-layered mount comprising a light grey inner mat and a darker grey-blue outer mat. The whole is housed in a gilt wood frame with a slight inward cove. No maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the item.
Condition report:
The needlework is in good condition with no visible staining, foxing, or pulled threads. The fabric ground remains taut within the frame. The gilt wood frame shows minor surface wear and small chips to the gilding, particularly at the corners and along the edges. The glass appears intact.
