Lot 196: A Moustiers Faience Lidded Soup Tureen and Underplate
Not sold
A French tin-glazed earthenware soup tureen set comprising a footed bowl, a domed lid, and a matching circular underplate. The tureen features a bulbous body supported by a flared pedestal foot, flanked by two horizontal scroll handles. The high-domed lid is surmounted by a stylised artichoke finial. The set is decorated throughout with hand-painted polychrome motifs in the Moustiers tradition, depicting long-tailed exotic birds perched on flowering branches, interspersed with floral sprays and insects. The borders are finished with concentric yellow, green, and blue bands, including a repeating blue and yellow scallop-and-point motif. The underside of the tureen is marked with a hand-painted black script reading MOUSTIERS. F.H.
Condition report:
The set is in fair condition but displays significant damage. A large chip is visible on the rim of the tureen body (photo 3), which reveals the underlying reddish-brown earthenware ceramic. Fine crazing is present across the glazed surfaces of all three components. Minor shelf wear and surface grime are present to the underside of the foot and the base of the underplate. The finial and handles appear to be intact.
