Lot 199: UK 1986 Bigbury Mint At The British Museum Token Set
This lot comprises a set of five metal tokens produced by the Bigbury Mint for the British Museum in 1986, housed in a red presentation case. The set includes a large central roundel and four smaller pieces. The central token features a stylized depiction of a classical temple facade, with the word MONEY struck at the base. To the right of the columns are the struck letters BWM and a caduceus symbol. The smaller tokens feature various classical mythological motifs, including a lion’s head, an owl, a bull, and a winged horse. Each smaller piece also bears the letters BWM. The exterior of the red case is printed in gold with a vertical monogram of the letters BWM and the text BIGBURY MINT AT THE BRITISH MUSEUM 1986. A circular logo in the upper left corner of the case features a T shape and the words BIGBURY MINT. A white adhesive label on the lower right corner of the case lid bears the handwritten text MISCELLANEOUS BIGBURY MINT AT THE B. MUSEUM.
Condition report:
The tokens exhibit significant iridescent toning across the surfaces, particularly visible as purple and gold hues on the smaller copper-toned pieces. The central token shows darker tarnish and some spotting across the field and temple design (photo 2). Fine surface scratches and minor handling marks are present on all pieces. The red presentation case shows light wear to the exterior and the cream-coloured interior lining has a small indentation from the case lid (photo 1). The set remains in its original presentation case.
