Lot 428: UK King George VI Framed Coin Collection
A collection of UK pre-decimal coinage from the reign of King George VI, presented in a wooden frame with a purple card mount. The set features ten denominations including a half crown, two shillings (one English and one Scottish type), a florin, a sixpence, a silver threepence, a brass threepence, a penny, a halfpenny, and a farthing. The half crown reverse displays the Royal Shield and is struck with the date 1939. Other visible reverses include Britannia on the penny and a wren on the farthing. The coins are arranged around central printed text reading GREAT BRITAIN and THE COINAGE OF GEORGE VI, with individual denominations printed in white. Latin legends including FID DEF and IND IMP are visible on several issues. The wooden frame is finished in a dark stain with a gilt-toned inner slip. No maker’s marks or signatures are visible on the display.
Condition report:
The coins show varying degrees of circulation wear and surface toning. The bronze denominations, including the penny and halfpenny, exhibit darkened patination and surface wear consistent with handling. The white metal coins show varying levels of tarnish and contact marks, with the 1939 half crown displaying a bright finish and minor surface abrasions. The brass threepence shows typical dulling of the original lustre. The purple card mount appears intact, though the printed text shows some minor fading. The wooden frame has several scuffs and losses to the finish along the edges and corners.
