Lot 266: A Set of Narex Mortise Chisels and a Murphy Marking Knife

This lot comprises a set of woodworking tools including six mortise chisels and a marking knife, housed in a shop-made wooden rack. Each chisel features a dark-stained wooden handle with a brass hoop at the pommel and a steel blade of rectangular cross-section. The handles are printed in gold lettering with a logo comprising a stylised P in a square followed by NAREX and a registered trademark symbol, above the text MADE IN CZECH REPUBLIC. The chisel blades are stamped with the maker and individual model/size numbers. Transcribing from largest to smallest, the blades read: NAREX 12 CZECH REPUBLIC 8882 62; NAREX 10 CZECH REPUBLIC 8882 60; NAREX 8 CZECH REPUBLIC 8882 58; NAREX 6 CZECH REPUBLIC 8882 56; NAREX 5 CZECH REPUBLIC 8882 55; and NAREX 4 CZECH REPUBLIC 8882 54. The accompanying marking knife features a wooden handle secured with two brass pins and a bevelled steel blade. The handle bears a worn gold stamp reading R. MURPHY, AYER, MASS. and H. STEEL.
Condition report:
The chisels are in used, functional condition. The wooden handles show light surface abrasions, dust, and cosmetic wear (photos 1, 3, and 7). The brass hoops exhibit typical patination and surface scratches. The steel blades show minor surface oxidation and accumulated wood dust, with the cutting edges appearing well-maintained (photos 4, 5, 6, and 8). The marking knife shows significant wear and loss to the gold maker\'s stamp on the handle and surface oxidation across the steel blade (photo 2). The simple pine rack shows common workshop wear.
