Lot 176: A Pair of Stanley and Unmarked Steel Corner Braces
Not sold
This lot comprises two metal corner braces, each featuring a cranked frame designed for drilling in confined spaces. The tool positioned at the lower right is constructed with a metal shank bearing the impressed wordmark STANLEY. The second tool lacks visible maker’s marks or inscriptions. Both braces are fitted with wooden handles of a bulbous, barrel form and rounded wooden head grips at the base of the frame. The frames exhibit a dual-pivot design with integrated gearing and ratcheting mechanisms to facilitate bit rotation at an angle to the sweep of the handle. Each tool is equipped with a knurled metal chuck for securing square-shank bits. The steel components show an aged patina throughout. No other maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the items.
Condition report:
Both tools show signs of heavy environmental exposure and age-related wear. Significant surface oxidation and rust are present across the metal frames, chucks, and ratcheting assemblies. The wooden handles and head grips show staining, wear to the finish, and surface abrasions, though they remain structurally sound. The mechanical operation of the ratchets, pivots, and internal chuck jaws has not been tested.
