Lot 164: A Mason’s Chartreuse Pattern Ironstone Wash Bowl and Baluster Vase
Not sold
This lot comprises two pieces of English ironstone in the Chartreuse pattern, featuring a large wash bowl and a matching baluster-form vase. The wash bowl is designed with a deeply lobed and scalloped rim, while the vase features a flared, scalloped neck and a rounded body. Both pieces are decorated with underglaze transfer-printed floral motifs in teal and green tones, depicting stylised peonies and foliate scrolls in the Chinoiserie style. The decoration is enhanced with hand-painted green and yellow enamels and finished with hand-applied gilding to the rims and floral highlights. A teal green printed mark is present on the base of the bowl, featuring the word MASONS in a semi-circle above a crown device and a banner inscribed IRONSTONE MADE IN ENGLAND. Below this is a copyright symbol followed by the pattern name CHARTREUSE and the text PRINTED AND HAND PAINTED. A faint, hand-painted green character N is also visible on the base.
Condition report:
The wash bowl shows light wear and rubbing to the gilding on the scalloped rim. The vase exhibits a horizontal hairline fracture running across the mid-section of the body and minor loss to the gilding at the rim. Both items display fine surface crazing to the glaze, consistent with the age and material.
