Lot 120: W. J. Jones, A Contemporary Genre Scene Of A Man Napping On A Bench

A contemporary oil painting on stretched canvas depicting a humorous genre scene. The composition features a man sleeping on a wooden garden bench with his legs outstretched and a border collie dog resting at his feet. The figure holds a can of Stones bitter, with two additional cans on the ground, and a newspaper bearing the mastheads for The Sun and Daily Star is tucked under his leg. A small bird is perched on the backrest of the bench against a backdrop of dense green hedging and a bright blue sky with white clouds. The work is executed in a contemporary folk-influenced realistic style with saturated colours and smooth surface textures. The painting is signed in the lower left corner in brown block capitals W. J. JONES. It is housed in a multi-tiered wooden frame with a cream and white painted finish. No maker’s labels or verso inscriptions are visible.
