Lot 90: A Large Chinese Pedestal Table with Celadon and Underglaze Blue Decoration
A large porcelain pedestal table featuring a circular top and a cylindrical base. The flat top is designed with a central circular medallion depicting a stylised chrysanthemum and scrolling foliate motifs in underglaze blue. This is bordered by a wide band of pale celadon-green glaze, which is moulded in low relief with a continuous pattern of roses and leaves. The outer edge is finished with a diaper-pattern border and a scalloped rim decorated with blue dots. The pedestal base tapers slightly and features a continuous hand-painted landscape in underglaze blue, depicting mountains, water, traditional dwellings, a bridge, and a fisherman in a boat. The lower portion of the base is decorated with a band of stylised ruyi-head clouds and cresting waves. A four-character mark in underglaze blue is painted on the outer rim of the table top; the characters are not legible as a specific name or reign. No other maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible.
Condition report:
The table is in good overall condition. Small orange and brown iron spots, resulting from kiln impurities, are visible on the tabletop surface (photo 4). There are fine surface scratches and minor glaze abrasions to the top consistent with use. The unglazed foot rim of the base shows minor surface dirt and shelf wear. There are no visible structural cracks or major chips.
