Lot 40: An Assortment of Vintage Woodworking Saws including Spear & Jackson
An assortment of vintage woodworking saws featuring three back saws and one handsaw. The collection includes a tenon saw with a brass stiffening rib and a wooden handle secured by three brass screws, one of which is a brass medallion bearing a crown device and the legend SPEAR & JACKSON SHEFFIELD. A second tenon saw features a metal stiffening rib and a wooden handle with three visible screw heads; the handle is impressed with the name A. FEATHERSTONE. The third back saw is of smaller proportions, likely a dovetail saw, with a metal rib and a wooden handle. The collection is completed by a handsaw featuring a tapered metal blade and a wooden open-style handle secured with a single metal wing nut. Three of the saws are fitted with improvised wooden blade guards secured by lengths of cord. No other maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the items.
Condition report:
All items show signs of significant age and heavy workshop use. The metal blades exhibit widespread surface oxidation, pitting, and areas of dark corrosion (photo 1). The wooden handles have numerous scuffs, surface staining, and minor chips, particularly to the horns (photo 2 and 4). The Spear & Jackson handle shows darker staining and possible wood degradation at the upper horn (photo 2). The metal hardware, including screws and the brass medallion, shows a heavy patina and surface oxidation. The wooden blade guards are worn with multiple abrasions and splits (photo 6).
