Lot 271: A Hose St. Pottery Loving Cup with Pastoral Scene
A two-handled loving cup featuring a waisted cylindrical body, twin scroll handles, and a flared pedestal base. The exterior is finished with a vibrant yellow and orange lustre-effect glaze. A central oval reserve contains a transfer-printed pastoral scene depicting a seated woman cradling a youth in a flowered meadow, accompanied by three lambs with trees and a fence in the background. The rim, handles, and base are decorated with gold-tone gilding, while the interior is finished in a plain white glaze. The base of the piece bears a circular backstamp printed in red, featuring an arc reading HOSE ST. POTTERY above a central graphic of a coiled fire hose and nozzle, with the bottom arc reading TUNSTALL STOKE ON TRENT.
Condition report:
The cup is in good overall condition with no visible chips or cracks. There is minor surface wear and rubbing to the gilding on the handles (photo 1) and around the top rim (photo 2), consistent with handling. The lustre glaze and central transfer-print decoration remain bright and intact.
