Lot 202: A Mid-19th Century 925 Silver Fiddle Pattern Spoon, 1848
A Victorian 925 silver spoon in the Fiddle pattern, featuring a broad terminal and a rounded bowl. The front of the handle is decorated with an engraved crest depicting a demi-lion rampant holding a cross. The reverse of the handle is struck with a vertical series of hallmark punches: the date letter N in a square shield with clipped corners, the duty mark of Queen Victoria’s profile facing right, the lion passant for sterling fineness, and a leopard’s head for the London assay office. A rectangular maker’s mark contains the letters GAWS.
Condition report:
The silver surfaces show fine surface scratches and light contact marks consistent with age and domestic use. There is minor tarnishing and a concentrated area of darker patina at the heel of the bowl and around the recessed hallmarks (photo 2). The engraved crest shows light wear but remains clearly defined. The bowl retains its original form without visible dents or thinning to the leading edge.
