Lot 183: UK 1988 Royal Mint Seven Coin Proof Set
This set comprises seven United Kingdom proof coins, consisting of a fifty pence, a twenty pence, a ten pence, a five pence, a one pound, a two pence, and a one penny coin. The coins are housed in a clear acrylic display case within a blue faux-leather presentation folder. The obverse of each coin features the third crowned portrait of Elizabeth II, while the reverse designs include Britannia, the Tudor rose, a crowned lion, a crowned thistle, the Royal Shield of Arms, the Prince of Wales feathers, and a crowned portcullis. The case is embossed with a silver-coloured Royal Mint crest and the words ROYAL MINT. A bronze-coloured rectangular plaque within the display is inscribed with a crown and the text ELIZABETH R 1988. The one pound coin bears the legend ONE POUND on the reverse. The twenty pence coin is inscribed TWENTY PENCE 1988.
Condition report:
The coins exhibit proof strike characteristics with frosted relief and mirror-like fields. The one pound coin shows visible white spotting (milk spots) and light peripheral toning on the reverse. Minor surface tarnish is present on the silver coins. The two copper coins appear in uncirculated condition with original lustre. The acrylic display case and blue presentation folder show no significant signs of wear. Supplied in the original Royal Mint presentation case.
