Lot 181: A Collection of Banknotes from Germany, Mauritania, Libya, and Syria
A collection of international paper banknotes comprising historical German issues and modern Middle Eastern and African currency. The historical German currency includes a REICHSBANKNOTE dated 1923 for FUNFHUNDERT MILLIONEN MARK, printed in purple and black with serial number 162479 and two red REICHSBANKDIREKTORIUM seals. A second REICHSBANKNOTE dated 1922 for ZEHNTAUSEND MARK features a portrait of a young man, serial number G.9342862, and two red seals. A larger format 1000 MARK REICHSBANKNOTE is decorated with an imperial eagle crest flanked by two allegorical figures and bears serial number N 1399185 E. Modern currency includes a Syrian 5000 POUND note dated 2023 with serial number M/18 6191725, featuring a soldier saluting a flag and a mosque; a Mauritanian 200 OUGUIYA note; and two Libyan banknotes, one depicting a portrait of Omar al-Mukhtar and the other showing a mosque.
Condition report:
The German banknotes exhibit significant signs of circulation including multiple sharp vertical and horizontal folds, heavy creasing, edge wear, and staining (photo 1). The 1000 Mark note shows minor tears to the top and bottom edges (photo 2). The modern Syrian, Mauritanian, and Libyan notes appear in Extremely Fine to Uncirculated condition with crisp paper, bright colours, and no visible folds (photo 1). None of the banknotes are supplied in protective capsules or sleeves.
