Lot 88: Two Late-20th Century American Zippo Metal Pocket Lighters
This lot comprises two metal windproof pocket lighters manufactured in the United States. The first lighter features a polished finish with etched floral and foliate scroll decoration across both faces, incorporating a blank rectangular shield on the front. The base is stamped C ZIPPO BRADFORD, PA. The second lighter features a brushed finish with pairs of diagonal slashes at the top-right and bottom-left corners. The base is struck with the inscription ZIPPO MFG. CO. BRADFORD, PA. MADE IN U.S.A. J ZIPPO VII PAT. 2032695. Both lighters are fitted with removable internal mechanisms featuring chimneys with circular ventilation holes and textured flint wheels. No other maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the internal or external components.
Condition report:
The lighters show signs of significant environmental exposure and handling. The internal chimneys exhibit heavy carbon build-up and dark soot deposits (photo 1). The wind guards and flint wheels show heat-related discoloration and oxidation (photo 1). The exterior metal casings display general handling wear, including fine surface scratches and scuffs (photo 3). There is minor tarnishing and accumulation of debris within the crevices of the etched decoration (photo 2). The items are not supplied with original protective cases or packaging.
