Lot 30: An Assortment of Carved Hardwood Elephant Figures
This lot comprises four carved hardwood elephant figures, consisting of one large adult and three smaller calves, all naturalistically rendered in walking poses. Each figure is carved from a dense, dark-toned hardwood featuring a visible natural grain and a polished finish. The sculptures are detailed with inset white conical tusks and small circular eyes. The adult figure displays large ears and a trunk curled towards the mouth, while the calves vary slightly in form. The calves stand in similar striding positions. No maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the items.
Condition report:
The figures show signs of surface wear and handling. Light surface scratches and scuffs are visible across the bodies of all four elephants. Accumulated dust is present in the deeper carvings and recessed areas (photo 1). The calf on the far right of the group exhibits a large irregular patch of lighter-toned wood on the right head and shoulder (photo 1). All inset eyes and tusks appear to be present and secure.
