Lot 74: US 1986 Statue of Liberty Centennial Commemorative Medal
A 1986 commemorative medal struck to celebrate the centennial of the Statue of Liberty. The obverse features a depiction of the Statue of Liberty against a background of radiant lines, with a vertical arc of stars to the left. Struck ribbon-style banners bear the inscriptions STATUE OF LIBERTY, CENTENNIAL, and the dates 1886-1986. The reverse depicts a hand holding a torch against a radiant background, with banners reading AMERICA’S, SYMBOL OF, and FREEDOM. Both faces are bordered by a decorative scalloped inner ring and a raised outer rim. The medal is of metal construction with dark toning in the recessed areas of the design. No maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the item.
Condition report:
The medal shows signs of environmental exposure and handling. The obverse exhibits significant dark toning and patina within the recessed radiant lines and lettering, together with light surface wear and minor nicks to the raised rim (photo 2). The reverse shows similar toning and surface contact marks, particularly to the banner details and the torch (photo 1). No protective capsule or original packaging is supplied.
