Lot 72: FR 1997 Henri Matisse 20 Euro Coin
A 1997 French commemorative coin of circular form. The obverse depicts a bust-length portrait of Henri Matisse, bearded and wearing a striped garment, with the legend HENRI MATISSE · 1869-1954 struck around the upper rim. The reverse features a stylised seated figure within a decorative rectangular frame, flanked by the date 19 97. Legends REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE and 20 EURO are struck around the rim, with twelve stars along the upper border. Two small punches are present at the base of the frame on the reverse. No fineness or hallmark punches are visible to identify the metal composition.
Condition report:
The coin shows signs of environmental exposure and handling. The obverse exhibits several dark oxidation spots across the field, particularly to the right of the portrait, and minor surface contact marks (photo 2). The reverse shows dark spotting near the stars and legends, with light surface wear (photo 1). The coin is not accompanied by a protective capsule or case.
