Buyer's Premium:

A mid-20th Century UK Bank of England banknote for the sum of one pound. The obverse is printed in green and features a vignette of a seated Britannia with a spear and olive branch to the left, and a large numeral 1 within an ornate frame to the right. The note displays the printed legends BANK OF ENGLAND, PROMISE TO PAY THE BEARER ON DEMAND THE SUM OF ONE POUND, LONDON, and FOR THE GOV. AND COMPA. OF THE BANK OF ENGLAND. It bears the printed signature L. K. O’BRIEN followed by the title CHIEF CASHIER. The serial number C49L 490797 is printed twice in red ink. The reverse depicts the Bank of England building in London, framed by scrolling foliage and two roundels depicting St. George and the dragon, printed in green with blue and pink undertones. A vertical security thread is embedded within the paper. No other maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the item.


Condition report:

The banknote shows signs of circulation and environmental exposure. A distinct vertical centre fold is visible across the note (photo 1). There are multiple light handling creases and soft surface ripples throughout the paper. Noticeable brown foxing and toning are present along the top and bottom margins (photo 1). The corners are slightly rounded and show minor edge wear. No tears, pinholes, or losses are visible. The note is presented raw without a protective sleeve or capsule.
