The obverse of each coin features the Machin portrait of the monarch, facing right and wearing a tiara, surrounded by the struck legend ELIZABETH II D.G.REG.F.D.. The reverse features the nine hands design, representing the member states of the European Economic Community at the time of the United Kingdom’s accession, encircling the central legend 1973 50 PENCE.
