Lot 135: Three Mid-20th Century UK, Canada, and Japanese Government Banknotes
This lot comprises three banknotes issued by the Bank of England, the Bank of Canada, and the Japanese Government during the Second World War. The UK note is a Ten Shillings issue, Series C, featuring a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and the legend BANK OF ENGLAND I PROMISE TO PAY THE BEARER ON DEMAND THE SUM OF TEN SHILLINGS. It bears the printed signature of J. S. FFORDE and the serial number C40N 406012. The Canadian One Dollar note, dated 1954, displays a modified portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with the legends CANADA, ONE DOLLAR, UN DOLLAR, and BANK OF CANADA – BANQUE DU CANADA. It includes printed signatures for J. R. BEATTIE and L. RASMINSKY with the serial number M9588518. The third item is a Japanese Government Ten Rupees invasion note for Burma, featuring a vignette of the Ananda Temple, the legend THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT TEN RUPEES, and the block letters BA. No maker’s marks or labels are visible on the items beyond the printed legends.
Condition report:
The banknotes show varying degrees of circulation and environmental wear. The Bank of England Ten Shillings note displays light vertical and horizontal creasing with minor foxing along the left-hand margin. The Bank of Canada One Dollar note features a prominent central vertical fold and light handling wear across the surface. The Japanese Government Ten Rupees note is in poor condition with heavy foxing, staining, and frayed edges; there is a complete horizontal tear through the centre and a large diagonal tear originating from the lower-right margin. None of the notes are provided in protective capsules or slabs.
