Lot 342: A 1952 Milestones of Manned Flight De Havilland Comet Commemorative Bar
A rectangular commemorative bar featuring a relief depiction of an aircraft. The obverse displays a side profile of an airplane struck in relief, accompanied by the transcribed legends THE DE HAVILLAND COMET and 1952. The reverse is struck with a central emblem consisting of a two-bladed propeller within a circular border. Above this, the text reads MILESTONES OF MANNED FLIGHT, while the lower section features the legend MINTED WITH THE CO-OPERATION OF THE SHUTTLEWORTH COLLECTION. A single capital letter H is struck to the left of the main text block on the reverse face. No hallmark, fineness mark, or stamped purity is visible on the item. No maker’s name is spelled out in the inscriptions.
Condition report:
The bar shows signs of environmental exposure and handling. Obverse: The surface displays multiple fine contact marks and scratches across the fields, with noticeable yellowish-brown toning concentrated around the raised lettering and the aircraft silhouette (photo 1). Reverse: The face exhibits significant surface wear, including numerous fine scratches and nicks to the raised perimeter rim (photo 2). Tarnish and toning are visible across the entire surface (photo 3). No protective capsule, case, or original packaging is supplied.
