Lot 327: A Wooden Biscuit Barrel with Metal Mounts and Ceramic Liner
A wooden biscuit barrel of staved construction with metal mounts. The barrel is formed from vertical wooden staves secured by two horizontal metal bands at the rim and base. The exterior is decorated with double-incised horizontal lines and features a shield-shaped metal cartouche pinned to the front. The item is fitted with a flat-topped metal lid featuring a central baluster-style knob and an arched swinging handle attached to the top rim. The interior contains a removable cream-coloured ceramic liner with a flared rim. The lot includes an assortment of turned and painted wooden decorative objects in the form of fruit or nuts, in colours of red, green, yellow, and purple. The base of the ceramic liner features a printed blue mark consisting of the numeral 7 with a horizontal stroke beneath. No maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the item.
Condition report:
The item shows signs of age-related wear and oxidation to the metal components. The metal lid, rim, and handle exhibit visible pitting and surface oxidation (photo 1). The wooden staves show minor surface scuffs and general wear to the finish (photo 2). The ceramic liner remains intact but displays blue transfer marks and scuffing to the interior base (photo 3). The painted wooden accessories show minor paint loss and surface wear (photo 3).
