Lot 319: A Footprint English Metal Bench Plane
A Footprint metal bench plane, of smoothing form. The tool features a metal body with a black finish to the interior, fitted with a wooden front knob and a rear tote handle. It includes a metal iron and cap iron, secured by a lever cap. A knurled metal adjustment nut is positioned behind the frog. A rectangular label on the lever cap features a white graphic of a human foot above the printed text FOOTPRINT. The rear casting bears the struck characters MADE ENGLAND. No other maker’s marks or signatures are visible.
Condition report:
The tool is in used, unrestored condition. Surface oxidation, grime, and pitting are present on the metal components (photo 1). The wooden knob and tote handle show extensive finish loss and wear, with a chip to the horn of the tote (photo 2). The metal sole exhibits surface scratches and corrosion (photo 4). Accumulations of dust and debris are present within the internal casting (photo 3).
