A Victorian ironstone figural jug modelled as a seated begging spaniel. The earthenware piece is decorated with hand-painted orange-ginger patches to a white ground, featuring brown eyes, a yellow-tinted muzzle with black stippling, and a black collar with a gilded locket. The chest is decorated with a vertical row of four red hearts, and each raised front paw is marked with three red lines. The rim and spout are formed as a decorative wreath adorned with purple plum-like fruit and green leaves. The reverse features a curved handle. The base bears a red printed mark with a central crown motif above the words IRONSTONE CHINA.
Condition report:
The jug exhibits extensive fine crazing to the glaze across the entire body, consistent with ironstone of this period. There is a small chip to the ceramic body and glaze on the front left paw, and a minor chip to the foot rim at the base. Rubbing and loss is evident to the gilded elements on the collar locket and the rim. The base shows light surface wear and minor shelf staining.
