Lot 279: A Collection of 17 Comic Books Including Marvel, DC, and Vertigo Titles
A collection of 17 individual comic books from various publishers including DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Image Comics, First Comics, and Viz Select Comics, dating from the late 1980s to the 2010s. The lot includes several number 1 issues and titles from the modern and bronze age.
DC Comics and Vertigo titles include The Savage Hawkman issue 7 (May 2012) and issue 8 (June 2012), both featuring cover art by Philip Tan. Gotham Central issue 30 (June 2005) features cover art by Michael Lark and Stefano Gaudiano. JSA issue 1 (August 1999) features cover art by Alan Davis and Mark Farmer. Green Lantern issue 1 (June 1990) features cover art by Pat Broderick. Valor issue 4 (February 1993) features Lobo on the cover. Shade, The Changing Man issue 16 (Vertigo imprint, October 1991) features cover art by Chris Bachalo. Also included is an issue of The Sandman from The Kindly Ones story arc, Suicide Squad issue 5 (DC Rebirth, January 2017), and Suicide Squad Most Wanted: Deadshot and Katana issue 3 (May 2016).
Marvel Comics titles include X-Factor issue 82 (September 1992) with cover art by Larry Stroman, Excalibur issue 123 (August 1998), and Sleepwalker issue 2 (July 1991) with cover art by Bret Blevins.
Other publishers are represented by Clone issue 1 (Image Comics/Skybound, November 2012), Southern Knights issue 32 (First Comics, July 1989), Silent Möbius (Viz Select Comics), and a Grendel reprint.
Several issues bear adhesive retail labels applied directly to the covers. A white rectangular label on X-Factor issue 82 is handwritten in black ink reading £3, 1992, and #82. A round white label on The Sandman cover reads £2. The polybag for Gotham Central issue 30 has a white rectangular label reading £2. Issue 1 of Grendel features a printed red and white circle logo reading 50c. Various issues display printed cover prices ranging from $1.00 US to $4.99 US, with some Direct Sales notations and UK pence prices.
Condition report:
The collection is in ungraded, raw condition. Minor spine stress marks with some colour-breaking are visible on several issues, including The Savage Hawkman issue 7 (photo 1) and Valor issue 4 (photo 2). There is slight blunting to the corners of Sleepwalker issue 2 (photo 2). Light surface rubbing is evident on the covers of Clone issue 1 (photo 2) and Southern Knights issue 32 (photo 1). Several issues have adhesive price stickers applied directly to the cover art, notably X-Factor issue 82, The Sandman, and Grendel (photo 1). Gotham Central issue 30 is contained within a protective plastic sleeve (photo 1). The lot appears to be in mid-grade, Fine to Very Fine condition.
