A vintage Chinese calligraphy set presented as a promotional gift from Cathay Pacific Airways. The set is housed in a storage box wrapped in a green and blue silk-style fabric featuring a repeating hexagonal floral pattern. The case is secured by two white bone-style toggles and fabric loops. The interior is lined with red velvet and contains three primary components: a writing brush, an ink stone, and an ink stick. The brush features a bamboo handle and a white natural hair tip. The handle is marked with red Chinese characters reading 上海百充星 (Shanghai Bai Chong Xing), alongside further characters in green and blue that are partially obscured by the securing loops. The rectangular ink stone is fashioned from dark grey stone, featuring a shallow reservoir and a carved phoenix motif on the upper-left shoulder. The black ink stick is decorated with a gilded relief dragon to one side and gold-toned characters reading 蒼龍 (Cāng Lóng) to the other. A white paper label is adhered to the inner lid, headed Chinese calligraphy set with the compliments of Cathay Pacific. It provides three numbered instructions for use and features the Cathay Pacific logo and the tagline Arrive in better shape.
Condition report:
The set appears to be in unused condition. The brush head remains stiff and pointed, showing no evidence of having been soaked or used (photo 1). The ink stone and ink stick show no signs of wear or ink residue (photo 2). The interior red velvet lining remains vibrant and clean (photo 2). The exterior fabric case is well-preserved with no visible fraying, staining, or losses (photo 3). The bone-style toggles and loops are intact and functional.
