Lot 169: A Collection of Vintage The Beano Comics 1988-1989
A collection of vintage British comic books published by D.C. Thomson and Co. Ltd. The lot comprises a run of The Beano comics dating from the late 1980s. Identifiable issue numbers include No. 2412 (8 October 1988), No. 2415 (29 October 1988), No. 2417 (12 November 1988), No. 2439 (15 April 1989), and No. 2440 (22 April 1989). Each issue features a masthead with THE BEANO in large red block letters with yellow outlines. Cover taglines include THE COMIC WITH IVY the TERRIBLE, THE COMIC WITH ROGER the DODGER, and THE COMIC WITH MINNIE the MINX. The cover art features classic characters including Dennis the Menace and Gnasher. The covers are printed with a price of 22p and include the text EVERY THURSDAY 22p and I.R. 34p (Inc. VAT). Several issues bear handwritten newsagent delivery notations in blue or black ink on the front covers, reading 40 Halifax or 40 Halifa.
Condition report:
The collection is in reader condition with signs of age and use consistent with newsprint material. The paper shows significant tanning and yellowing, particularly evident along the edges of the stacked issues (photo 5). Covers exhibit frequent creasing and small peripheral tears (photo 2). The stapled spines show moderate wear with light staple rust and small stress lines visible (photo 4). One issue at the front of the pile has a vertical taped repair through a comic panel (photo 1). Several front covers are defaced with permanent ink newsagent marks (photo 1).
