A United Kingdom sterling silver Crown dated 1896. The obverse features the Old Head or Veiled Head portrait of Queen Victoria facing left, wearing a coronet and veil. The legend reads VICTORIA DEI GRA BRITT REGINA FID DEF IND IMP. The engraver initials T.B. for Thomas Brock are situated under the truncation of the neck. The reverse displays the Benedetto Pistrucci motif of St. George on horseback slaying the dragon, with the date 1896 in the exergue and initials B.P. present to the right. The coin is struck in .925 silver with a milled edge. This issue represents the final portrait type used during Queen Victoria’s reign.
Condition report:
The coin is in fine condition with significant circulation wear visible on the high points of the portrait, horse, and dragon. Both surfaces exhibit a dark, uneven patina with numerous fine contact marks and light surface scratches consistent with age and use.
