Coins, Gold & Silver Bullion Auction
A United Kingdom bi-metallic two-pound coin issued in 2002 to commemorate the XVII Commonwealth Games held in Manchester. The coin is constructed with a nickel-brass outer ring and a cupro-nickel inner core. The obverse features the fourth definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, with the designer initials IRB visible below the truncation. The obverse legend reads ELIZABETH II DEI GRA REG FID DEF. The reverse, designed by Matthew Bonaccorsi, depicts a stylised athletic figure with trailing ribbons and a circular inset featuring the flag of Scotland (Saltire). The reverse inscription reads XVII COMMONWEALTH GAMES 2002 with the denomination £2. This coin is one of four regional variants issued for the series, identified by the specific heraldic flag in the reverse design.
Condition report:
The coin is in circulated condition, displaying general surface wear, numerous contact marks, and minor scratches across both faces. There is evidence of localised dark toning and dirt accumulation within the recessed areas of the design. The rim remains intact without significant bruising.
