Coins, Gold & Silver Bullion Auction
A 1970 United Kingdom pre-decimal proof coin set issued by the Royal Mint. The set comprises eight coins and a rectangular bronze-coloured plaque featuring the Royal Coat of Arms and the inscription ROYAL MINT. The denominations included are a half crown, two shillings, two one shilling pieces (one with the English crest and one with the Scottish crest), a sixpence, a brass threepence, a bronze penny, and a bronze halfpenny. The coins are struck in cupro-nickel, nickel-brass, and bronze. Each piece displays proof strike characteristics including mirror-like fields and frosted relief. The reverse designs include the inscriptions FID DEF followed by the denomination and the 1970 date. The collection is housed in its original clear plastic presentation case with a purple velvet-effect insert, contained within a purple card folder with gold-stamped lettering reading COINAGE OF GREAT BRITAIN AND NORTHERN IRELAND 1970. This set marks the final year of issue for pre-decimal coinage in the United Kingdom.
Condition report:
The coins are in uncirculated proof condition, displaying brilliant lustre and mirror finishes with no visible wear or toning. The presentation case and velvet-effect insert are in excellent condition. The original outer card folder shows minimal shelf wear to the corners and edges.
