Lot 184: A Pair of UK Queen Victoria Sterling Silver One Shillings, 1898 and 1899
A pair of United Kingdom sterling silver (.925) one shilling coins dated 1898 and 1899. The obverse of each specimen features the Old Head or Veiled Head portrait of Queen Victoria, designed by Thomas Brock. The obverse inscription reads VICTORIA DEI GRA BRITT REGINA FID DEF IND IMP. The reverse of the coins displays three shields within a Garter design, inscribed ONE SHILLING with the dates 1898 and 1899 respectively at the base. Both coins have milled edges. These coins were minted in .925 fineness silver with a standard weight of 5.66 grammes and a diameter of 23.5 mm.
Condition report:
Heavily circulated. Both coins exhibit significant wear, heavy dark toning, and surface grime. The 1898 specimen shows extreme wear on the reverse, with the central design elements almost completely flat. The 1899 specimen shows moderate detail on the shields but significant flattening of the higher points. Edges show minor bruising consistent with age and circulation.
