Coins, Gold & Silver Bullion Auction
A 1950 specimen coin set issued by the Royal Mint, comprising nine denominations. The collection includes a cupro-nickel Half Crown, Florin (Two Shillings), two Shillings (English and Scottish types), and Sixpence; a nickel-brass Threepence; and a bronze Penny, Halfpenny, and Farthing. All coins are dated 1950. The obverses feature the uncrowned effigy of King George VI facing left with the legend GEORGIVS VI D: G: BR: OMN: REX F: D:. Reverse types include the crowned royal coat of arms, Tudor rose and thistle, three lions and lion rampant crests, the GVIR royal cypher, thrift plant, Britannia, the Golden Hind, and a wren. The coins are housed in the original rectangular red textured presentation case. The lid is gold-stamped with a heraldic crest featuring a crowned shield flanked by a castle and rose above the text ROYAL MINT. The interior consists of a black velvet-lined base with black pull-ribbons and a white fabric lid liner.
Condition report:
The coins are in uncirculated specimen condition, exhibiting sharp strikes and retaining high levels of original mint lustre. Minor peripheral toning and surface oxidation spotting are present, particularly on the cupro-nickel and bronze denominations. The presentation case shows external wear with scuffing to the corners and edges. The white interior lid liner is heavily discoloured with foxing and brown staining throughout.
