An earthenware ashtray designed as a deep-well vessel of cylindrical form with slightly tapering sides. The thick, flat rim features three equidistantly spaced semi-circular cigarette rests. The body is finished in a mottled, dark forest-green glaze. The exterior is decorated with three high-relief moulded figures and stylised foliage. One face depicts a figure wearing a three-pointed yellow crown over a thick red headband, while a second face features yellow hair and a large, floppy red beret. The figures are hand-painted with white slip for the faces and bright yellow and red glazes for the headwear and hair. The interior is fully glazed in the same mottled green as the exterior. No characters, symbols, or maker’s marks are visible on the rim, interior, or sides.
Condition report:
The item shows several signs of age and use. There are multiple small chips and nicks along the upper rim, including one more significant chip measuring approximately 10mm visible above the face in the red beret. Minor glaze wear and loss are present on the high points of the relief moulding, particularly noticeable on the noses of the faces and the edges of the crown. Minor surface scratches and signs of use are present in the interior well. Occasional small glaze misses or pinholes from the firing process are visible.
