Buyer's Premium:

A late Victorian mahogany commode armchair dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. The chair features a decorative backrest with a top rail centred by a carved circular medallion flanked by incised foliate scrollwork, positioned above four turned spindles. It has sweeping, shaped arms set on curved supports. The solid mahogany seat is hinged at the rear, opening to reveal a circular aperture containing a ceramic commode liner with a decorative moulded lid featuring a floral border. The lower section of the chair is constructed as a boxed cabinet to house the vessel, with panelled sides and front. The piece is raised on turned and ringed front legs and square-sectioned raked rear legs. The item is constructed from mahogany with a dark-stained finish using traditional joinery techniques.

Condition report:

The chair is in fair to good antique condition with signs of age and use throughout. There are numerous surface scratches, scuffs, and abrasions to the wood finish, most notably on the top of the arms and the edges of the seat. A small chip is visible on the front right corner of the hinged seat lid. The wood finish shows some clouding and wear consistent with its age. The hinges are functional. The ceramic liner lid is present; the internal bowl appears intact from the top view.
