A mid-20th-century portable reel-to-reel tape recorder manufactured by Defiant, featuring a BSR Monardeck transport mechanism. The unit is housed in a black textured vinyl-covered case, secured with metal latches and fitted with a plastic carrying handle. The control interface comprises a black panel with gold-tone lettering, featuring two rotary knobs for Volume and On-Off / Tone, a sliding function lever, a Superimpose push-button, and a Record Level indicator. Input and output connections are located on the front panel, including jacks for Microphone, Radio, and an Extension Speaker. The central deck area is finished in white plastic and displays the circular BSR logo. The recorder includes two clear plastic tape reels; one contains Scotch magnetic tape and the other bears a handwritten label for Side 1 Records over a Gevaert sticker.
Condition report:
The external vinyl-covered case shows general age-related scuffing and dust accumulation. Metal hardware, including the latches and input bezels, exhibits surface oxidation and tarnishing. The internal white plastic components show yellowing consistent with age. The red plastic lens for the Superimpose Indicator is present. Functional status is untested and internal components have not been inspected.
